Noah and the World Wide Flood

I. Noah and the Universal Flood
A. Discussed in the Old Testament, book of Genesis
1. Chapters 6-8 talks about this event
2. All the things talked about are real
B. God saw the wickedness of the people.
1. "The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become,and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time." -Genesis 6:5 NIV
2. "The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth,and his heart was filled with pain."-Genesis 6:6 NIV
C. God decided to destroy the earth with a flood. -Reasons ?
1. "So the LORD said, I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth-men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air-for I am grieved that I have made them."-Genesis 6:7 NIV
2."Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and full of violence."-Genesis 6:11 NIV
3 . "God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on the earth had corrupted thier ways."-Genesis 6:12 NIV
D. Noah obeyed God.
1. "But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD." -Genesis 6:8 NIV
2. "This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man blameless among the people of his time,and he walked with God." -Genesis 6:9 NIV
3. "Noah had three sons:Shem,Ham and Japeth."-Genesis 6:10 NIV
II.God warned Noah about the Flood to come.
A. "So God said to Noah, I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth." -Genesis 6:13 NIV
1. God commands him to build an ark and gives him these instructions on how to do it.
"Make yourself an ark of gopher wood;you shall mkae the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch." -Genesis 6:14 NASB ('pitch -means tar)
2. "This is how you shall make it; the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits."-Genesis 6:15 NASB
3. "You shall make a window for the ark,and finish it to a cubit from the top;and set the door of the ark in the side of it;you shal make it with lower, second,and third decks." -Genesis 6:16 NASB
B. God repeated,the warning about the flood to come as his judgment on the wicked.
"Behold ,I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth to destroy all flesh which is the breadth of life,from under heaven:everythin that is on the earth shall perish." -Genesis 6:17 NASB
C. God promised to always be with Noah and his family.
" But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark-you and yours sons and your wife,and your sons' wives with you."-Genesis 6:18
D. God told Noah to take animals on the ark with him and his family (wife,three sons' and thier wives)
1. "And every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you ; they shall be male and female." -Genesis 6:19
2. "Of the birds after their kind,and of the animals after thier kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind,two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive." -Genesis 6:20
E. God told Noah to take food with him on the ark.
1." As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it for yourself;and it shall be for food for you and for them." -Genesis 6:21
2. "Thus Noah did ; according to all that God had commanded him,so he did."-Genesis 6:22
III. God told Noah to get himself,and his family on the ark.
A. "The LORD then said to Noah , Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation." -Genesis 7:1 NIV
1. "Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two fo every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate," -Geneis 7:2
2. "and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep them alive throughout the earth." -Genesis 7:3
B. God told him how long the Flood would last.
1. "Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights,and I will wipe away from the face of the earth every living creature I have made."-Genesi 7:4
2. "And Noah did all that the LORD commanded him." -Genesis 7:5
a. This took a lot of faith...
b. It had never rained before,not even once.
c. Noah still obeyed out of his great faith anyway.
C. Noah was really up in years when the Flood started.
1. "Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth." -Genesis 7:6 NASB
2. "And Noah and his sons and hiswife and his sons' wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood." -Genesis 7:7 NIV
D. The animals went to Noah all on thier own.
1. "Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and evertyhing that creeps on the ground,"-Genesis 7:8 NASB
2. "male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah."-Genesis 7:9 NIV
3. "And after the seven days the flood -waters came on the earth."-Genesis 7:10 NIV
4."In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeeth day of the second month-on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forthmand the floodgates of the heavens were opened."-Genesis 7:11 NIV
5. "And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights." -Genesis 7:12 NIV
a. "On that very day Noah and his son, Shem, Ham, and Japeth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark." -Genesis 7:13 NIV
b. "They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according ot its kind, everything with wings."-Genesis 7:14 NIV
c. "Pairs of all creatures that have the breadth of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.'-Genesis 7:15 NIV
d. "The animals going in were male and female of every living thing,as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in." -Genesis 7:16 NIV
For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth,and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth,and the ark floated on the surface of the water. "-Genesis 7:17-18 NIV
"They rose greatly on the earth,and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountainst to a depth of more than twenty feet."-Genesis 7:19 -20 NIV
IV. Nothing on the earth survived the flood.
A. For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth,and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth,and the ark floated on the surface of the water. "-Genesis 7:17-18 NIV
1. "They rose greatly on the earth,and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountainst to a depth of more than twenty feet."-Genesis 7:19 -20 NIV
2. "Every living thing that moved on the earth perished-birds, livestock,wild animals,all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind." -Genesis 7:21 NIV
3. "Everything on dry land that had the breadth of life in its nostrils died."-Genesis 7:22 NIV
4." Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth...."-Genesis 7:23
B. Flood Survivors?
1. "...Only Noah was left,and those with him on the ark."-Genesis 7:23b NIV
2. 8 people,and the animals on the ark
C. "The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days."-Genesis 7:24 NIV
1. 150 days of water on the earth
2. 5 months of nothing ,but large amounts of water surrounded the ark
V. God did not forget about Noah,his family and the animals on the ark.
A. "But God remebered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark,and he sent a wind over the earth and the waters receded." -Genesis 8:1 NIV
1. the waters around the ark started to dry up
2. "Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed,and the rain had stopped falling from the sky."-Genesis 8:2 NIV
3. "The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down,"-Genesis 8:3 NIV
4. "and on the seventeeth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat."-Genesis 8:4 NIV
5. "The waters continued to recede until the tenth month,and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible."-Genesis 8:5 NIV
B. Noah lets two birds leave the ark.
1. "After forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the ark"-Genesis 8:6 NIV
2. "and sent out a raven,and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth." -Genesis 8:7 NIV
3. "Then he sent out a dove to see it the water had receded from the surfaceof the ground."-Genesis 8:8 NIV
4. "But the dove could find no place to set its feet because there was water of the sutace of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark." -Genesis 8:9 NIV
a. "He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark."-Genesis 8:10 NIV
b. " When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth."-Genesis 8:11 NIV
c. "He waited seven more days and sent the dove out agian, but this time it did not return to him." -Genesis 8:12 NIV
